Sometimes talking about your problems is not enough. Sometimes, if you want to change your life, you need to learn new skills that will help you live in new ways. I co-lead a life skills group that aims to help you do just that. If you are having trouble finding emotional stability in your life, if you judge yourself to harshly, if you are having trouble coping with stress, if you are having trouble connecting with others, if you are having trouble acting impulsively, or if you just feel disconnected from your own life, the skills this group teaches can help you to live more effectively. It may be time for you to gain a new perspective by learning some new skills.
This group is built around many of the big ideas of dialectical behavioral therapy, with four modules that address four different areas of life.
Here is what the group will cover: (Click a Title to Learn More)
Module 1 - Mindfulness
Learning mindfulness skills will help you to grow your awareness of what is going on inside your head and your heart. In other words, by learning mindfulness skills you will become more able to see what is going on in your life and to learn from what you see. When looking for greater peace and stability in your life mindfulness skills are essential for that balance.
Module 2 - Interpersonal Effectiveness
Learning interpersonal effectiveness skills will help you to better navigate all the relationships you have in your life, whether they are close intimate relationships with loved ones, professional relationships with coworkers, or brand new friendships. How to make new relationships, better balance relationships, and end destructive relationships are also covered The way we connect with people has a profound impact on our environment and our sense of well-being.
Module 3 - Emotion Regulation
If you have big emotions that can really disrupt your life the information in this module could be especially helpful for you. This module teaches all about emotions, including the way emotions work biologically. Emotions cannot be directly altered but in this module you will learn ways to cope with those big emotions as well as ways that you can change your life overall so that your emotions begin to shift too (like changing the soil to change the shape of a garden).
Module 4 - Distress Tolerance
When things go wrong, when emotions just become so big that it is hard to find any sense of clarity, there are skills that you can learn to help you work through those difficult moments. Emotions cannot be directly altered, but you can learn ways to ride through the emotional storm and find a calm harbor faster. The strategies and skills of this module are simpler (because simplicity is essential when you are having trouble concentrating) but they can have profound results.
